Malta Biennale 2024 – Decolonising Malta

Malta, a cultural crossroads long shaped by religious and colonial rule—from the Knights of St. John to British and French occupation—is saturated with monuments that perpetuate narratives of power and symbolic conquest. Who shall give us flesh to eat offers new readings for their recontextualization and reclamation, opening dialogue on heritage, conservation and memory. Created for the “Decolonising Malta” section of the Malta Biennale 2024, the site-specific installation featured life-sized fragments of Valletta’s architecture, including a replica of the shipwrecked St. Paul statue cast entirely in white chocolate. Installed inside Tal-Pilar Church, the sculptures were gradually consumed by visitors over the course of the exhibition.
