SOMA, Mexico City
Volveré y seré millones is a fictional reimagining rooted in real events surrounding Mexico City’s Monument to Independence. The installation assembles a constellation of premonitions: a 1948 film in which the Angel of Independence collapses during an earthquake; the actual destruction of the monument’s angel in the 1957 quake; and the final words of Túpac Amaru II before his execution in 1781—“I will return and be millions”— a phrase that has been resignified in multiple political contexts and here reimagined as a feminist war cry. The installation stages the fall of the Angel, using the icon’s destruction as an opportunity to open new readings of national symbols. In a second iteration, the phrase is printed on posters and stacked in a pile on the gallery floor and offered freely to visitors.
