Phantom Limb is a term used to describe the sensation that an amputated or missing limb is still attached, which happens when the brain continues to detect the presence of the missing limb even though it is no longer connected to the body, likely through pre-conceptive memory. The term is borrowed to address the current state of spaces that no longer fulfill the function they were granted in the past, but rather exist only as a useless architectural carcass. The pieces include rubber casts and readymades composed by objects, materials and castings taken from the main buildings of the abandoned Letchworth Psychiatric Center, an institution located outside NYC whose structures have fallen into disrepair. Built for the mentally disabled, it was permanently closed down in 1996 due to reports of abuse to the patients and staff.
